PET – or polyethylene terephthalate – is one of the most commonly-recycled materials in the world. It's found in things like water bottles and food containers, and can be recycled after use into flakes, pellets, and sheets for manufacturing all sorts of different products.
In this post, we'll walk you through how our recycled PET pellets are made – and how they achieve their EFSA- and FDA-approved safety and purity.
The first step to producing recycled PET pellets is to obtain the materials required for the process. When consumers discard their single-use plastic bottles, these are collected, cleaned, and sorted at recycling facilities into large 'bottle bales.'
These bales are then taken to a specialized facility where they will be processed into PET flakes.
When the PET plastics have been thoroughly cleansed of any impurities (such as dirt, labels, and caps), they are crushed into small pieces of plastic known as flakes.
When PET plastics are in this form, they are highly versatile and can be further processed into many different materials.
If the flakes are being turned into recycled PET pellets, first they are heated and melted to form a molten plastic liquid. At Intco, we use cutting-edge equipment to achieve FDA-compliant food-grade production lines throughout this process.
The molten liquid is then extruded through a specialist machine to produce long strands of plastic, which is left to cool. When the plastic is once again in solid form, it is cut into small pellets before being washed and dried to remove any remaining impurities. The process is now complete!
Recycled PET pellets provide manufacturers with a whole host of benefits.
